"Very tall and very gaunt. Johnny wore glasses with a peculiarly thick lens over the left eye. He looked like a half-starved, studious scientist. He was probably one of the greatest living experts on geology and archeology."
An unusual characteristic of Johnny's is his love for big words. He will never use a small one if he can find a big one to use. Johnny has been known to spout some real jawbreakers such as, "Preternaural eventuation is an amaranthine potentiality." His favorite expression is "I'll be Superamalgamated!"
Johnny is the only one of Doc' aids that holds no military rank, but like the others he did serve his country in it's time of need. In fact he probably did more than the others. In 1914 Johnny was enlisted by the State Department as a "field agent". His occupation as an budding archeologist and geologist proved to be the perfect cover for spying in other countries. He worked inside the Axis countries in the years leading up to and through the most of the World War. The State Department had taught him to speak fluent German, French and Latin. Johnny loved the combined occupations and the opportunities it afforded him. His work in archeology and geology made him a recognized figure in Europe, Asia and North Africa and his work as an agent put him in good graces with the leading statesmen of several nations.
He was eventually discovered and fled into the countryside. He cleverly assumed the identity of a dead American soldier and was captured and beaten so severely that he lost the use of his left eye. He spent the rest of the war in prisoner of war camps. Late in the war he was transfered to the infamous camp at Loki, where he met Doc and the others.
After returning from the war, Johnny took a position as head of the Natural Science department of a prominent eastern University. This enabled Johnny to make major contributions to the sciences he so loves. During this period of time, he stayed in touch with Doc and the others. In fact, at Renny's request he performed the soils engineering study of the site where the Crime College was built. His experience as a geologist proved invaluable to the successful excavation of the site.
As a result the wartime eye injury, Johnny was unable to see out of his left eye. Needing a magnifier for his work as an archeologist and geologist, he chose to wear a pair of glasses with one clear lens over his good eye, and a magnifying lens over his blind eye. In 1934 as the adventure of The Man Who Shook The Earth began, Doc performed a pioneering new operation which restored Johnny's damaged eye. It was actually a cornea transplant. The first operation of its kind anywhere. Not wanting to give up his magnifier, Johnny had a monocle made with a magnifying lens, which he carries always attached to his lapel by a ribbon. One indicator of an immenent brawl is when Johnny is seen wrapping the monocle in a handkerchief and placing it in his pocket for safe keeping.
Johnny
has a peculiar physical makeup that allows him to go for days
without food. He does however, require more drinking water than do the
others of Doc's men. Although he never engaged in any collegiate
sports,
his long legs make him an excellent sprinter.
In Doc's organization, Johnny often fills the function of the group's secretary of state. He, with Ham's help at times, handles matters with the United States government as well as foreign governments. Johnny is an excellent statesman and understands the protocols that it requires. His unique experience places him in a position of priviledge with a great many governments and officials. Johnny's connections and experience make him the ideal man for working out the complex political and logistical problems Doc and his crew are constantly faced with as they travel the globe.
