How I Discovered Doc Savage

With stealthy silence Doc Savage crept into our house and positioned himself outside my bedroom door. Although I was completely unaware at the time, I now know why he sat there lurking for what may have been months. He wanted to make sure he was at my side when the time came and I was ready to accept his help. You see, I was a boy in trouble, and Doc already knew it.

How did he know? Perhaps the souls of Doc fans long since dead sent him to me. Maybe they heard the cries of a young boy crushed under the anguish of a troubled home and dispatched him to rescue me. It might as well have been so, because that is what happened.

I don’t remember exactly when, but on a lazy weekend afternoon while I was in the sixth grade I was sitting on the floor rifling through the bookcase at the end of the hallway outside my bedroom door. I just stumbled on them. There they were, on the bottom bookshelf- three Doc Savage paperback books all in a row. I slid them out and eyed them curiously. They were battered copies of Brand Of The Werewolf, The Lost Oasis, and The Monsters. As I gazed at the covers something stirred faintly, deep within my brain- something vague but profound. It may have been the stirrings of an adventurer’s spirit. It may have been the vibrations of a fated event occurring. I’ll never know. But one thing I can say is it was a pivotal moment in my existence.
