The story begins: "It was a drizzling grey evening full of moaning ghosts."

From the far reaches of the Gobi comes a terror unlike any Doc Savage had ever encountered. It was an ageless thing that had existed since the beginning of time- the ghostly green soul of The Mystic Mullah. With his nebulous green soul-slaves he had begun to terrorize the world. These deadly floating serpents were the incorporiety of his past victims. With their horrific sting and sudden neck-snapping death they carried out his commands-

The tugboat Whale Of Gotham speeds ashore in the thick fog of the Hudson River. Aboard is the Khan Nadir Shar-  Son Of Divinity, Destined Master Of Ten-Thousand Lances, Khan Of Tanan, Ruler Of Outer Mongolia. Acompanying him is his bodyguard Hadim and a wealthy merchant of Tanan, Joan Lyndell. They have come to enlist Doc Savage's aid in battling The Mystic Mullah, whose goal it is to overthrow the Khan and take control of Central Asia.

Doc and his men fight the incredible foe and experience the horrible pain of the deadly green soul-slaves. The fight takes them to far-off Tanan where they make their last stand in the castle of the Khan!
