The story
begins: "There were no chemists working for the Mammoth Manufacturing
Company that could fortell future events. So, as they watched white-haired,
distinguished Jerome Coffern don hat and topcoat after the usual Friday
conference, none knew that they were never to see the famous chemist alive
again."
In his grief, Doc's wrath is terrible as he chases down and destroys one under-villain after another in a rare killing fury. In later adventures, Doc would adopt the rule that no life would be taken unnecessarily. His hunt reveals that the secret of the diabolical smoke is known only by the master-fiend KAR! After KAR uses his supply of the strange substance in a spree of crimes, Doc and his men learn that its source is Thunder Island, a partially sunken volcano in the south Pacific near New Zealand. KAR is headed there for a new supply of the stuff.
Doc and his men are determined to head him off. Upon arriving at Thunder Island they fly their plane into the steam-filled crater rim in search of KAR and his men. An aerial battle ensues and Doc's plane is downed, not by KAR, but by a huge flying reptile...a prehistoric pterodactyl! Doc and his men parachute into the mists and into a frightful world cut off from time itself and a final showdown with KAR!.
