The story begins: "A comet hurled through the cloudy summer sky".

Deep in the Lousianna swamp a voodoo cult master known as the Gray Spider spins his web of conspiracy to monopolize the timber industry of the south. Lumber magnate Big Eric and his daughter Edna are next on the list to fall. They flee to New York to find Ham Brooks, an old college buddy of Big Eric's. After a perilous journey including brutal attacks by crooked lumber detectives and monkey-like swamp denizens, Doc Savage joins the battle and the quest begins.

Doc and his men swing into action. Doc and Ham fight in the open while secretly Long Tom sets up an intricate system of wire taps, Renny poses as a lumber detective on the take, Monk poses as a traitorous american chemist on the lam for selling chemical weapons to a foreign enemy and Johnny drives deep into the swamp disguised as a Voodoo priest! All are focused on one thing, infiltrating and destroying the clan of the Gray Spider.

All except Doc are outwitted and taken prisoner in the heart of the swampland. While they wait for their doom as voodoo sacrifices, the Man Of Bronze lays his plans for the final checkmate at the mysterious "Castle of the Moccasin" and the ultimate destruction of the Gray Spider.
