The story begins: "The cream-colored yacht was anchored fully a mile from the nearest shore habitation. That in itself was vaguely suspicious."
An inexplicible spectral figure in buckskin known as the Squeaking Goblin has made several attempts to shoot the educated and wealthy Chelton Raymond. As hillbilly cousin Tige says, "A Raymond aint a feared a no man, but thot Goblin sure enough be a spook, 'cause my great graddaddy shot the Squeaking Goblin plumb dead comin' on eighty year ago." Chelton is scared. He summons Doc Savage for aid.  Doc discovers that the skeletal sharpshooter's flintlock rifle makes the peculiar squeaking sound when fired and although its shots are deadly, there are no bullet slugs found in any of its victims.

Doc and his men quickly become embroiled in an old fashioned Kentucky mountain feud. But, hill folk don't like "furriners" meddling in their affairs and there is little cooperation from the clans.  After nearly 100 years of relative peace, the feud has become worse than any of the "old-timers" can remember. Men are being killed every day. Women and childred mourn in fear. Doc and his men struggle to reveal the identity of the Squeaking Goblin, put a stop to the killing, and decipher the meaning of a 100 year old book titled, "The Life And Horrible Deeds Of That Adopted Moor, Black Raymond".
