The
story begins: "Five men were running across the golf links of the Widebrook
Country Club. They kept in a compact group, and their manner wa determined
and sinister. Each carried a hooded golf bag."
From the acrid waste lands of Arizona, Bandy
Stevens journeys to New York to seek Doc's aid. Along the way he dodges
Buttons Zortell and his gang in his attempt to obtain Doc Savage's help.
At Doc's office he pushes the door bell and, as Doc opens the door Stevens
begins convulsing and dies. Buttons Zortell had placed a deadly poison
on the button. Doc pulls a money belt with a letter and a map folded inside
it from Bandy Stevens dead body. Doc and his men are able to figure out
that the paperes are a ruse to send them astray. Zortell swapped the real
papers with the fake ones without Bandy Stevens knowing it. Then Zortell
and his men kidnap Monk. In the ensuing fight Monk's beautiful secretary
Lea Aster steals the real papers from Zortell. Monk quickly escapes, only
to find out that Buttons Zortell realizes what Lea did and returns to Monk's
office and kidnaps her! Doc and his men track her captors to a vacant tenement
building. Doc defies their death trap. Lea is quite a girl. She manages
to leave a detailed message using the phosphoresent chalk Monk gave her.
She is being taken to a secret hide-out in Red Skull Canyon, in Arizona.
The fate of the Mountain Desert Construction Co. owned by Nate Raff, Richard
O'Melia and Ossip Keller is at stake, and some unknown peril threatens
one or more of these three men. Back To Adventures Page
