The story begins:"New York is a city of
many races. All nationalities are seen on her streets"
Doc Savage is set upon by four Arab figures
who demand that he take them to the submarine Helldiver. Once inside
the Hidalgo Trading Company they try, unsuccessfully
to steal the under-sea boat. Doc has Monk and Renny standing by, and in
the darkness of the ensuing fight Doc tangles not only with Arabs, but
also a striking White-Haired Girl, who speaks in a language even Doc can't
understand. She runs off into the night before Doc can question her. Shortly
after, the jewel-toothed, one-eyed Arab, Mohallett, shows up at Doc's Skyscraper
Headquarters, claiming to be the emissary of an Arab prince who desires
to rent the Helldiver! Doc suspects that Mohallett's story is a
lie and makes it very clear that the submarine is not for rent. Events
prove that the Arab gang is led by Mohallett, a desert bandit. He has come
to New York to obtain the Helldiver by whatever means necessary.
The mysterious White-Haired Girl is his unwilling guide to an unknown submarine
destination. After another unsuccessful attempt at Doc's sub, Mohallett
gives up and heads for Arabia with The White-Haired Girl as his prisoner.
Doc follows with his men in the Helldiver. After a trans-Atlantic/
Mediterranean voyage, the fight with Mohallett is re-joined. The adventure
leads to a journey miles inland across the Rub' Al Khali desert. Not overland,
but through an enormous underground river. Their final destination...The
Phantom City and the mystery of Mohallett's greed! Back
